What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays designed to gradually move your teeth into a planned position. They fit closely over your teeth and provide a discreet alternative to traditional fixed braces.
How do clear aligners work?
Your treatment is divided into a series of small, carefully planned tooth movements. Each set of aligners applies gentle pressure to selected teeth. As you progress through the sets in the correct order, your teeth gradually move towards the position shown in your treatment plan.
Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?
Clear aligners can treat many common orthodontic concerns, but they are not suitable for every person or every type of tooth movement. A dental professional will assess your teeth, bite and oral health before confirming whether treatment is appropriate for you.
What problems can clear aligners treat?
Depending on the complexity of your case, clear aligners may be used to improve:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Crooked or rotated teeth
- Overbites and underbites
- Crossbites
- Protruding teeth
- Teeth that have moved after previous orthodontic treatment

How are clear aligners different from traditional braces?
Clear aligners are removable and designed to be discreet. Unlike fixed braces, they do not use permanent metal brackets and wires. You can take them out for meals and oral hygiene, although they must still be worn consistently for treatment to work as planned.
Fixed braces may be recommended for certain complex cases, so the most appropriate option will depend on your clinical assessment.
Are clear aligners completely invisible?
They are not completely invisible, but they are made from clear material and are usually difficult to notice during everyday conversation. Tooth-coloured attachments may be required on certain teeth, but these are designed to remain discreet.
Will I be able to see my expected result before starting?
Where available, your digital treatment plan can provide a visual simulation of the proposed tooth movements and expected outcome. This is a treatment projection rather than a guarantee, as individual teeth can respond differently.
How long does clear aligner treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the amount and complexity of movement required. Minor corrections may take a few months, while more complex cases can take longer.
After assessing your teeth, your clinician will provide an estimated treatment time. This estimate may change depending on how your teeth respond and how consistently you wear your aligners.
How many hours a day should I wear my aligners?
Most treatment plans require aligners to be worn for approximately 20–22 hours each day. They should generally only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing and flossing.

What are aligner attachments?
Attachments are small shapes made from tooth-coloured dental material. They are temporarily bonded to selected teeth to help the aligners grip and apply pressure more precisely.
Not every patient needs attachments. When required, they are removed by a dental professional at the appropriate stage of treatment.
Will I need retainers after treatment?
Yes. Retainers help prevent your teeth from moving back after treatment. Your clinician will provide instructions on how often and for how long they should be worn.
